The Adult Chronicles, Episode 1

So transitioning into being a “grown up” and so called “adulthood” has so far been quite an experience. There have been moments of adventure and misadventure alike, hilarity, drama, and so on.

But mostly its been a bitch…

But really though…

I guess I can’t complain too much. Despite the fact that I’m not all that great at my job (used car salesman, go figure) I still work for a great company…I’m able to go to bed every night without feeling like I’ve cheated or duped anyone. I live life right now primarily devoid of any major expenses, thanks almost entirely to the fact that my parents have been gracious enough to let me keep mooching off of their hospitality. Hey…at least I don’t live in their basement, right? And among other things the close friends that I developed through the final two years of college have primarily stayed consistently by my side.

There’s a war going on in my life right now. Wait…I promise this isn’t turning into one of those teen angsty “I hate my father” type deals. The war I’m referring to, unfortunately, is the war being waged between my hairline and forehead. Despite the fact that my chest, back, and especially shoulders continue to grow hairier with each passing month my hairline, it seems, is beginning to thin. Go fucking figure. I suppose it isn’t really all that surprising, though, I feel like I’ve been a middle aged man for many years. I smoke the occasional cigar, complain about gas prices, muse about tax codes, I’ve even started reading about the stock market. My hairline, I guess you could say, is actually doing more catching up than following behind…catching up with how I seem to think and act anyway…

Now that I’m out of college I can definitely see the sharpness of my intellect waning at least a smidgen. Just 90 seconds ago I had to google how to appropriately spell “hairier.” I had originally spelled it “harrier.” Oh right…hair…not harrier.

There are quite a few things that I miss from my college days. Chief amongst them is the feeling that I knew what I was talking about at least part of the time. Getting a liberal arts degree was quite the inflator of my ego…there were hardly any wrong answers in my religion courses the last year or so. In adulthood and selling cars, it seems, there are plenty of wrong answers. Other things I miss include thinking that noon was just too goddamn early to get out of bed, the reckless abandon for my liver, and just relaxing on campus.

Being an adult is still pretty cool though. My bank account has a few grand in it right now, I’ve never had so much money at one time in my life ever before. That’s a really cool feeling. It seems that in college I had all the time in the world to do things, but not enough money for everything I wanted to do. Now-a-days I have more than enough money to do the majority of things that I’d like to do, but never the time. Funny how that shit works, isn’t it? I’ve started reading books for enjoyment again, something I really missed doing when I was in college. I’m on the first of the original Bourne books by Robert Ludlum…much better than the movie…but maybe saying that is just a little too trendy for me…

In any case. As I’m writing this its going on 11:15 in the evening…which I regret to say…has been pretty close to my bedtime these days… 9 months in my past there’s a slightly younger, much more bearded self, mocking me right now.

Oh well.

Cheers.
